3X4 Genetics test FAQs

This article answers the questions we hear most often about genetic testing in general and about the 3X4 Genetics Test.

What is a genetic test?

A genetic test reads your DNA. Genetics make up the baseline "code" by which your body functions, and the impact of every choice you make is influenced by your personal genetic makeup. Different genetic tests look for different things. Ancestry tests tell you where your DNA comes from and report a handful of health traits, while clinical tests diagnose conditions for a doctor. A lifestyle genetic test like the 3X4 Genetics Test reads variants in the genes that run your metabolism, nutrient processing, detoxification, inflammation and recovery.

The 3X4 Genetics Test is a simple, pain-free cheek swab you complete at home. You rub a sterile swab on the inside of each cheek for 60 seconds, with no spitting or blood draw required.

What can a genetic test tell me, and what can't it?

What it can tell you: A genetic health test shows how your body tends to work: how you process nutrients, caffeine and fat, how your appetite and blood sugar respond to food, how well your cells handle inflammation, detoxification and oxidative stress, and how you recover from training. Your 3X4 Health  results cover 35 pathways across 10 health areas, showing your focus areas and your lower-priority ones, so you know where to put your effort first. Your results stay valid for life, because your genes don't change.

What it can't tell you: A lifestyle genetic test does not diagnose disease. It is also not a prediction and not an ancestry report. Your genes describe tendencies, not fixed outcomes. For example, genes influence appetite signaling and how you handle blood sugar, but they do not decide your weight, and lifestyle remains the biggest lever. Your results work best as a starting point for personalized nutrition, used alongside, not instead of, professional guidance. You don't need to see a 3X4 practitioner to receive your report, but combining your genetic insights with your medical history, lifestyle, diet preferences, and exercise choices gives you a fuller picture.

Is a genetic test the same as an ancestry test?

No. An ancestry test compares your DNA with reference groups to estimate where your ancestors may have lived.

3X4 Genetics is a health and wellness DNA test built for action. Instead of a raw data dump, 3X4 analyzes only genes with strong scientific validity and reads them together as pathways, producing specific diet, supplement, and lifestyle recommendations. In short: an ancestry test tells you about your heritage; 3X4 tells you what to do about your health.

Do my genes change over time?

Your DNA does not change, so you only take the 3X4 test once. What does grow is the science: as nutrigenomics research advances, your report and recommendations are updated in the app at no extra cost. One test becomes a resource you can reference for the rest of your life.

Do I need to take the test more than once? Is there a subscription cost?

You only need to take the test once. The test looks at your DNA, which stays the same throughout your life, so there's no need to repeat it.

There is no subscription required to receive your results. Your test is a one-time purchase.

Can I buy a test as a gift? Will the price appear on the packing slip or confirmation email?

Yes, you can send a 3X4 test to someone else. Enter their address as the shipping address at checkout. The packing slip in their package does not show a price.

Your order confirmation, which includes the price, goes to the email address you enter at checkout. Use your own email address so the confirmation comes to you.

Your recipient will register the kit with their own account when it arrives.

What is the 3X4 Health genetics test?

3X4 Health is an at-home DNA test that turns your genetics into a tailored health and nutrition plan. Built on pathway-based nutrigenomics, 3X4 reads how your genes work together across 10 health areas and 35 pathways, then delivers a Genes First™ Plan: clear, actionable guidance on what to eat, which supplements to take, and how to train, move, and age well.

How is the 3X4 Genetics Test different from other tests?

It reads genes chosen for their effect on everyday health, scores them together as biological pathways, and turns the results into a plan for food, movement, and lifestyle. Here's what that means in practice:

  • It looks at genes working together. 3X4 looks at how genes work together in cellular pathways and functional systems to control processes such as inflammation, metabolism, and detoxification. 3X4 scores the whole pathway rather than a single gene, which is what makes the result actionable.

  • Every gene is chosen for a reason. Each gene was selected from peer-reviewed scientific publications based on two factors, scientific validity and actionability, and each one has documented actions you can take to improve your health. Genes are scored with DARWIN, 3X4's proprietary machine-learning algorithm.

  • It focuses on what to do next. 3X4 Health condenses information into clear, concise, and actionable steps, and the Genes First™ Plan turns your results into a tailored plan for food, supplements, and lifestyle, included with every test with no subscription.

  • It's trusted in clinic. More than 9,000 practitioners use 3X4, and your sample is processed by a CAP and CLIA-certified laboratory, the same accreditation standard your physician's bloodwork is held to.

Who can take a 3X4 test?

The 3X4 Genetics Test is for anyone who want to understand how their genes shape their everyday health.

Can a child take a 3X4 Genetics test?

Individuals under the age of 18 should only use 3X4 Genetics services under the supervision from a legal guardian.

Do you need a practitioner to do a 3X4 test?

No. You do not need to see a 3X4 Practitioner to receive your report, but when your genetics insights are combined with your medical history, unique lifestyle, diet preferences, and exercise choices, a full picture starts to emerge. If you already see a health practitioner, contact us and we will check our database to see whether your health practitioner has been previously certified to offer the 3X4 test. If not, we can introduce you to a practitioner in the 3X4 Network.

Do I get a downloadable PDF version of my report?

Yes. A downloadable PDF version of your 3X4 Health results are available on the 3X4 Health app. Learn more about 3X4 Health app here: Using the 3X4 Health app.

If you did a 3X4 Blueprint or GENEFIT Sport test, your practitioner will share your PDF file with you.

Where is the test available?

3X4 is available in the United States and has regional partners worldwide in the USA, UAE, Japan, and South Africa. If you live outside the United States, please contact global@3X4genetics.com if you want your own 3X4 test or want to offer 3X4 tests in your healthcare practice..

What does the 3X4 Health report cover?

Your 3X4 Health report organizes results into 10 key health areas and 35 pathways. A pathway is a group of genes that work together, so the analysis looks at genes in combination rather than one at a time. The 10 health areas are Activity, Blood Sugar Regulation, Brain Health, Cellular health, Heart & Vascular, Hormone health, Muscle & Skeletal health, Nutrients, Sensitivities, and Weight.

How does 3X4 choose which genes to analyze?

Every gene in the 3X4 Genetics test is chosen for two reasons. It has strong science behind it, and it gives you something you can act on.

Strong science. The genes in the 3X4 test were selected from peer-reviewed scientific publications. To confirm that science is solid, 3X4 makes sure there is enough research to show what the gene does and how your version of it affects your body.

Something you can act on. Every gene in your report was hand-picked because there are documented actions you can take to reduce its genetic impact and improve your health. This means your report focuses on what you can do, not just on what your genes say.

How genes are scored. The test focuses on the genes with the greatest potential to influence your health. Each gene is scored with DARWIN, 3X4's own independent machine-learning algorithm. The highest-scoring genes are then looked at together, based on how they work in combination, instead of one at a time.

Does the 3X4 Genetics test include high-penetrance genes such as BRCA1, BRCA2, TP53, MLH1, APC, or PALB2?

No. The 3X4 Genetics Test is not designed to look for BRCA1, BRCA2, or other high-penetrance genes, which are genes where a single variant can substantially change the likelihood of a specific hereditary condition.

Caution: Do not use your 3X4 results to decide whether you need hereditary cancer screening. If you have a personal or family history of breast, ovarian, or other cancers, talk with your doctor or a genetic counselor about clinical genetic testing.

How does the 3X4 test process work?

Could my results affect my insurance or job?

In the US, a federal law called the Genetic Information Nondiscrimination Act (GINA) generally limits how health insurers and many employers can use genetic information when making decisions about coverage or employment. These protections have some limits. For example, GINA may not apply to very small employers or certain government and military employers, and it does not cover life, disability, or long-term care insurance. Some states have their own laws that may offer additional protections.

Because every situation is different, this information is general in nature and is not legal advice. If you have questions about how genetic information could affect your insurance or employment, we recommend speaking with a qualified legal or insurance professional.

Can I delete my data or my sample?

Yes. 3X4 Genetics will delete your data and destroy your DNA sample on request.
